Their story
Maya lives with her mother, Kamala, and her two younger siblings in a small rented room on the outskirts of Bhaktapur. Her father passed away when she was five, and since then her mother has worked as a daily-wage laborer at a nearby brick factory to support the family. Despite the difficult circumstances at home, Maya is one of the brightest students in her class and consistently ranks near the top in her school exams.
Maya has a deep love for drawing — she fills the margins of her notebooks with sketches of flowers, mountains, and her family, and dreams of one day becoming an art teacher so she can help other children discover the same joy she finds in creating. Her teachers describe her as curious, hardworking, and unusually mature for her age, often helping younger students with their lessons during recess. The family struggles to cover school fees, books, and uniforms each term, and Maya sometimes has to skip school during planting season to help her mother with odd jobs.
